Pre-Primary: The B.D. Somani Way

Pre-primary: The B.D. Somani way

We at B.D. Somani aim at developing a child’s mental abilities, perspectives and mastery of skills that will create future problem solvers, innovators and entrepreneurs. We focus on working on the ‘Habits of the Mind’ to create lifelong learners. Enabling them from a very young age to develop habits that will allow them to be successful in whatever they choose to pursue.

The curriculum follows a spiral steam (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) approach, where the exploration of concepts takes on a spiralling trajectory of increasing complexity each year. The foundational year might introduce basic scientific principles through hands-on activities and simple experiments, fostering curiosity and observation skills. As the children progress, technology integration may involve interactive learning tools and simple coding exercises. Engineering concepts might begin with basic building blocks and progress to more intricate construction projects, encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking. Artistic expression evolves from basic creative activities to more advanced projects, integrating math into geometric patterns and spatial arrangements. Meanwhile, mathematics concepts, starting with counting and basic shapes, gradually advance to more complex mathematical ideas like patterns, measurement, and even early algebraic thinking. This spiral approach ensures that each year builds upon the foundation laid in the previous, fostering a holistic and progressively challenging STEAM education for preschoolers.

We introduce our preschoolers to a multilingual environment that includes languages such as Hindi, English, Marathi, and Sanskrit. This diverse linguistic approach not only reflects the cultural richness of our country but also provides young minds with a broader cognitive foundation. In this language immersion setting, preschoolers can engage in activities that seamlessly integrate language learning into their daily routines. For instance, interactive storytelling sessions may alternate between English and Hindi, while counting games in Marathi can enhance numerical skills. Introducing simple Sanskrit phrases during mindfulness or yoga activities adds a spiritual and cultural dimension. Through playful and age-appropriate activities, preschoolers not only absorb the linguistic nuances of each language but also develop an early appreciation for linguistic diversity, setting the stage for enhanced cognitive flexibility and communication skills in the future.

A typical day at preschool

Settling young children into a playgroup or nursery environment is a crucial process that lays the foundation for their future learning experiences. One of the key components at B.D. Somani, The International School, Kharghar is to establish a strong relationship between teachers, children, and parents. Our teachers create a welcoming atmosphere by getting to know each child individually, understanding their unique needs, preferences, and personalities.

A regular day kicks off with a burst of energy and enthusiasm during the Hello Time. It's the moment when little ones, wide-eyed and full of curiosity, greet each other and their teachers. The air is filled with cheerful hellos, tiny waves, and the joy of starting a brand-new day of learning and fun.

To minimize anxiety and promote a sense of security, teachers gradually introduce children to their new environment. The initial days may involve shorter hours in Playgroup and Nursery allowing children to acclimate to the surroundings and routines at their own pace. Teachers use a gentle approach, encouraging exploration and play while being attuned to each child's emotional needs. Creating a familiar and comforting space helps build the child's confidence and minimizes separation anxiety.

As a shift and a direct contrast to the mass-educating style of the traditional classroom, where everyone is set the same task and completes it in the same way, we follow the station rotation model, ‘Learning Stations’. Divided into three sections, these stations are tailored to engage young minds in various educational activities. From colourful puzzles that stimulate cognitive development to arts and crafts that encourage creativity, each station is a playground of discovery.

As the clock ticks away, it's time for the enchanting Magic Circle. Gathered in a cozy circle, children participate in interactive storytelling sessions, engaging puppet shows, or captivating demonstrations. This segment not only enhances language skills but also ignites imagination, fostering a love for stories and narrative exploration.

Eager appetites are satiated during Munch Break, a delightful time for a quick snack and socialization. Sharing laughter and nibbling on healthy treats, the children recharge their energy for the adventures that lie ahead.

Flexibility is the key during Choice Time, where children are free to select activities that capture their interest. Be it building blocks, pretend play, or exploring sensory materials, this unstructured period encourages independence and allows each child to follow their unique passions.

The Play gym becomes a mini playground within the playgroup, fostering gross motor skills and physical development. With climbing structures, soft mats, and tunnels, the little ones engage in supervised activities that promote coordination, balance, and, most importantly, pure joy.

The day spills into the open air during Outdoor Play. Whether it's running around the play area, experimenting with sand and water tables, or enjoying the swing set, this segment combines fresh air with physical activity, fostering a love for the great outdoors.

As the clock winds down, the children gather for Goodbye Time, a moment to reflect on the day's adventures. With hugs, high-fives, and smiles, the preschoolers bid farewell eager, enthusiastic and looking forward to a new day at school.
