Learning in Pre-Primary
In the first few years of life, more than one million neural connections are formed each second – a pace never repeated in the human lifetime. These formative years are crucial for laying the foundation for a child's future learning, health, and behaviour. The quality of early experiences plays a vital role in shaping a child’s brain development, creating either strong or fragile foundations for future success. Just as active bodies need nourishment, active minds need constant stimulation, and it’s essential to nurture their curiosity and appetite for knowledge.
At BDSIS, Kharghar, we ensure that learning in the early years is joyful and enriching. Our approach emphasizes making learning fun and meaningful by incorporating various strategies to stimulate curiosity, creativity, and holistic development.
To make learning engaging and enjoyable, we focus on the following approaches:
Extended Learning
This approach connects the school and the community, immersing students in real-world experiences. It supports the STEAM curriculum, fosters critical thinking, and promotes project-based learning and makerspace activities.
Real-World Learning
We take students beyond the classroom, offering enriching visits to expand their learning horizons. For inaccessible places, we organise virtual tours to ensure students achieve desired learning outcomes.
Learning from the Masters
Expert guest visitors are invited to the school to share their specialized knowledge, enhancing students' learning experience in alignment with the monthly themes.
International Days
Celebrating international days helps students understand global cultures, festivals, and key issues. Integrated learning activities tied to monthly themes foster cultural sensitivity and awareness.
Special Days
These provide hands-on, integrated learning opportunities across various subjects, allowing students to make meaningful connections and apply their knowledge in diverse contexts.
Components of the Skill-Based Program
Literacy
We follow the whole language approach, providing students with opportunities to acquire, comprehend, and communicate information effectively. Students develop expressive and receptive language skills through different literacy components, empowering them to become confident communicators.
Writing
Our writing program provides a solid foundation for spelling, letter formation, and sentence structure. We implement developmentally appropriate, multisensory strategies for early writing, based on research into how children learn best. These strategies engage all learning styles—students touch, move, and manipulate objects as they build essential habits and skills for writing.
Numeracy
Students are given numerous opportunities to hone their mathematical skills across different strands, promoting confidence and competence in problem-solving.
Creativity
Creativity is fostered through both visual and performing arts. Students explore different sensory materials and enthusiastically experiment with art techniques and processes. Exposure to the works of notable artists and their peers inspires students to create their own original artworks. They express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas through dance, music, drama, and instruments while interacting with their peers and community.
Beyond Academics
At BDSIS, Kharghar, we believe that learning extends beyond traditional academics, focusing on a range of activities that nurture the whole child:
Step & Learn
This Finland-based program combines physical activity with academic learning, helping students alleviate stress, stay focused, and develop confidence. Engaging in movement-based tasks also simplifies STEAM concepts for young minds.
Indian Music
Introducing Indian music offers a rich cultural experience that enhances cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development. By incorporating traditional Indian music into their routine, students gain an appreciation for cultural diversity while fostering their developmental growth.
Western Music
Exposure to Western music broadens children’s understanding of global cultural traditions. Learning about the history and context of Western music supports cognitive development and offers an engaging way for students to explore creativity through sound.
Art
Art activities such as drawing, painting, and sculpting encourage creative thinking, problem-solving, and self-expression. These activities also enhance fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and dexterity through hands-on exploration.
Pyjama Drama
Through our partnership with Tiny Tribes, led by Shweta Sankhla, we incorporate programs like Pyjama Drama and Musical Bonding. These internationally recognized programs use music, movement, and imaginative play to enhance communication, problem-solving, empathy, and language skills. These activities align perfectly with our philosophy of learning through play.
Soft Gym
Soft Gym activities promote physical development in a safe, gentle environment. Activities like climbing, crawling, and rolling help improve gross motor skills, balance, coordination, and strength. Integrating these activities into our pre-primary curriculum supports the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development of young children.
Chess
Although chess may seem complex, simplified versions can be adapted to young children. By making chess interactive and enjoyable, we help develop cognitive skills, memory, patience, discipline, and creativity while making the learning process fun. The key is to ensure chess is engaging, fostering a positive experience while enhancing critical thinking skills.
Introduction to Age-Appropriate Sporting Games
Early exposure to sporting games helps children develop physical coordination, teamwork, and discipline. These age-appropriate activities ensure that students actively engage in physical fitness while learning essential life skills.
Parent Partnership
We recognize the importance of parental involvement in early childhood education. Our learning extension activities are designed to encourage parents to play an active role in their child's development, creating a strong partnership that supports the learning journey.
